  Old  I'm in Alaska! :)

After I swore in on April 17th and shipped out to go through basic training in Lackland AFB, TX and then tech school in Keesler AFB, MS as of yesterday I have finally made it to my first duty station Elmendorf AFB, AK!

I graduated from tech school Sep 25 but I had been waiting on a polygraph before I was issued my orders (it was a national security requirement for me to take a polygraph for this career field before I could proceed to this base). So until then I had been doing details around the squadron
Yesterday I flew from Gulfport, MS to Memphis, TN about an hour and a half then flew from there to Minneapolis wich was about another hour and a half. From there I flew to Anchorage, AK which was about 5 and a half hours. I showed up with 80 lbs of luggage, no jacket, and it was 35 degrees outside

I think I will love it here, the scenery is beautiful

Sounds like a good time. What position did you apply for?

You don't really apply for a position when you come into the USAF. First you take the ASVAB test and depending on how good you score there will be more jobs to choose from when you go to the MEPS (Military Enlistment Processing Station) in your area. After you have youir physical and everything done you will be asked to choose 6 jobs from the list that you qualify for. After that you swear into the delayed entry program and during that period you are just waiting around at home to find out what job you were selected for and when you are going to ship out. Of he 6 jobs you pick the Air Force will try to put you into the career field they need. If they don't need anyone from the careers you picked then you will be placed into something like Open General which means that they will just pick something they need and you don't know what your career will be until the last week of basic if that happens.

My career is Communcations and Computer Systems Operations, 3C0x1

It was the 3rd choice on my list of jobs

I didn't know it was that complicated to join. If you dont mind asking, what were the 6 careers you picked?

Heh the process is a lot more complicated if you have unpaid debt or have been in trouble with the law.

Hrmm I don't know if I can remember all of the jobs I picked (I did this part of the process last year on Nov 13th so it has been just shy of a year since I swore into the delayed entry program )

1. Air Traffic Control
2. Space Operations
3. Communications and Computer Systems Operations
4. Visual Information
5. Satellite, Wideband, and Telemetry systems
6. Visual Imagery and Intrusion Detection Systems

I now also have a Top Secret / SCI clearance

I'm not sure how good this will look on a computer screen because I took this photo from my cell phone and attached it to this post via my cell phone but this is the view of the mountains from close to my dorm
