  Old  Hello! Need Guidance :)

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself here- newbie and fairly new to the web design world too- I'm a freelance website designer pretty capable with XHTML, CSS, Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc but definitely confused as to which direction to go in next, should I learn javascript/php/flash etc.. I have (VERY) basics of all three and totally lost (in the which one to persue sense). Guidance/thoughts very much appreciated!

Looking forward to learning loads on here, meeting other designers and maybe being able to help where I can- when I get good enough!

Nice to meet you all

Ann

Hi Ann,

First, welcome to TalkFreelance. As for which direction to go in, my suggestion would be to learn all three, sooner or later!

Since you're familiar with HTML and CSS already it would make sense (to me at least) to push forwards with JavaScript as those three are so inter-related. There's no reason why you couldn't jump in at the deep end with all three technologies though.

Nice to meet you too.

Thanks a million for the feedback- I guess that's what I needed to know- I realise I'll have to get to grips with them all eventually but I didn't know the most logical progression- I'll get the studies going on that so.

Thanks Salathe!

Welcome to the forums.

CSS, HTML, javascript are the more client-side visual things. If I were you , I would go for learning something that helps on the backend such as PHP, or MySQL, etc.

But I guess everyone has their own way of doing things..

HI guys! Thanks for the greetings and input.

eeek! confused.com, although I definitely understand what you mean developer_x.. server side applications (php) etc definitely seem to be the way forward, but have gotten started on some javascript and it's making sense so far so might keep with that so I have the client side down, then start to work on php etc- no doubt none of this will go to plan but I can hope!

Coming from the same skills you did - I leaned more towards PHP. I find my clients like to update-Insert-delete there own content, Making Content Management Systems with PHP. Javascript is good to know but i find it's easyier to find scripts to change and make your own. By the way Jquery (javascript/CSS) is awesome.
