Linux
Hey,
Has anyone here run linux before? If so what type. I have tried running mandrake linux, and it worked out fairly well for a bit untill I noticed (after a few hours while installing ps) that there is really no way to install windows progs. ANyone have any suggestions on what type of linux to use if someone where to look in to it, and any ways to run windows on it?

I use Fedora. I can install PS, I like it. There is ways to run windows "in a window" type thing but I won't really get into that now. I will later.

I've used RedHat Linux, Knoppix Linux, a little bit of SuSE Linux but I currently run on Ubuntu Linux.
Ubuntu is a very user friendly OS, much like Windows but without the bugs.
It's all I use, you don't even need Windows.
You can use Wine to run Windows programs. Wine is an emulator so the Windows programs wont run as fast. But with Ubuntu, most of the software you need already exists within it.

I didn't like it. I used Fedora Core 2, and it ended up corrupting my hard drive. Couldnt connect to the internet with it either.

Let me guess, you tried mounting your Windows drive which was NTFS and you wrote to it?
All these faults are usually to do with the user and not the product

I don't know. I just put the CD in and followed the steps. Plus people have told me that Fedora Core 2 had a problem that closely resembles mine.
How would you explain the offline-ness then? Thats obviously a software problem.
It's a plug and play modem. You just put it in and you're on.

oh well if that's the case then it's probably a bug in the software then
Many people complain saying that Linux "corrupted" their Windows drive but it's often mentioned somewhere that wrriting to a NTFS partition via Linux can cause problems (and a fault in Linux is not the problem, it's more to do with compatibility) so I assumed this was the issue here

I've tried Slackware, Red Hat, Fedora, Debian, Mandrake, Knoppix, Suse, and Gentoo (that I can remember). In my book Linux is the hands down winner for servers, and it has every bit of potential to blow up the desktop market if somebody would come along with some money and do it right.
I would personally try Mandrake for a beginner.

I quite enjoyed using the RH9 interface, however wthout WINE it seemed quite tedious for me to use the standard WINDOWS applications which I'm used to.
Solid, quick piece of software

You have to try Ubuntu Linux and SuSE Linux, then
