BUY AND SELL WEBSITES
There are an awful lot of website designers out there, millions if you search Google, with many more becoming website designers every day. The problem is there is no entry barrier to being able to call yourself a website designer; anyone can do so and an awful lot of people do. With many simply buying their chosen software product and proclaiming themselves now Website Designers.
On the opposite side of the spectrum you have some amazingly talented individuals that can design better than their local competition; they have a collection of software and well they live, talk and breathe website design.
It matters not where you fit within this spectrum, be you highly skilled or not, the secret to becoming a successful website designer is in marketing your services... it matters not if you can design better than the next guy because if you can market and sell your services better you'll ultimately be more successful.
In fact if you actually learn how to sell, your designs reflect this and so the end result is the websites you design are more successful. Why? Because you can better advise your clients as to content, wording, layout, etc... From a specialists point of view thus you'll sell more and more Websites and yet your design skills may be no better than anyone elses.
Its all about sales, if you can sell you'll make it, if not you'll always struggle.Mention the word sales to most people and a look of horror passes across their face; they believe, wrongly, that it is something they cannot do, something they are afraid of doing and something someone else should do.
The simple truth however is that anyone can learn how to sell. The first thing we need to do is to determine what makes customers buy, because if we can understand that we can tailor our approach to meet their buying requirements. Customers generally buy to:
• Gain a Benefit
• To avoid a Loss
If you actually consider this for a moment and then apply it to your own buying habits you'll be amazed at the results as this applies to almost everything you buy. So let us look at it from a website designer's point of view shall we.
To Gain a Benefit :
On a piece of paper write down all the benefits a customers gains by using your services, and be careful not to get benefits and features mixed up. I'll list a few of the benefits associated with using FX Digital Pty ltd so that you can see what I mean:
• FX Digital design successful websites - and our definition of a successful website is any website that generates an income - Benefit = ability to generate income.
• Highly experienced - Benefit = use our knowledge to your advantage (more sales, more enquires, better design, etc)
• Comprehensive Solutions - Benefit = Will save me time, single source responsibility
• Small Business - Benefit = quicker turnaround time, better customer service, more adaptable.
To avoid a Loss :
In a similar fashion you can do this with your avoid a loss scenario and if you actually give this some thought and spend some time on it, you'll end up with a list of things that make people buy from you.
• Customer retention - Loss - If I don't have a great looking and fully functional website my customers may go elsewhere.
• Reliability - Loss - If I don't use some reliable I could lose sales and it could damage my reputation
• etc
Have you noticed price doesn't figure in your list... people do not buy based on price alone... they buy based on benefits and to avoid a loss. Interestingly, like many designers I used to believe that if we offered something for free or at a low cost we would have customers approaching us and our job would be easier... I learnt the hard way that the exact opposite is true. If you offer something for free or at low cost then the value of your product or service is perceived accordingly which means it has little or no value and brings little benefit with it. Whereas the company down the road that charges considerably more brings with it a whole host of benefits and funnily enough they always seem to secure more work. Thus we say that website buying and selling is a upcoming business to reach the goal.
