You can also use a transparent PNG but the GIF would probably workout better because of browser compatibility. However, as someone else pointed out, if you're doing this for the sole purpose of protecting your background image then it's not really worth going through this hassle as it can easily be bypassed. I'm pretty sure a "save as" on any browser would still save the background image. I'd watermark it if you're really concerned.
