If all you "got" out of this experience is some people can't be trusted the same or a similar episode will probably happen to you again.

How about putting some brain-power to the sequence of what happened to figure out what went wrong, and where? Or to deciding what you can do to make sure this doesn't happen? For example, would you . . .

. . .perform better due diligence (as they call it) on a client before you sign on to do the work? Would you have worked for this guy if you had checked out his reputation?

. . .review the auction site's policies before you sign on to use them? It's fairly typical that these places will favor clients offering work over those who bid on the jobs. Furthermore there are probably dispute resolution policies there: by releasing the money you have told them all is okay.
