Old  Programs automatically choose correct program files folder in 64-bit Vista?

I'm running Vista x64 on my main computer and I've noticed that 99% of the programs, games, etc. on my computer are in the Program Files (x86) folder. There is literally nothing in my Program Files folder except for stuff that originally came with Vista. This seems a little weird to me; I know that most stuff isn't 64 bit compatible but I wanted to make sure that programs are automatically "sorted" into the correct program files folder (I always figured that while I'm installing the program/game, that if it defaults into Program Files (x86), then it's not 64-bit compatible). Am I right or do I have to look up the stuff I'm installing and then force the 64-bit compatible programs into the normal "Program Files" folder?

Thanks.
