What do you plan on using it for? I started with Maya because I was fortunate to get a copy from a digital media program I took. If you don't have the budget and are just looking to get used to 3D modeling I recommend Swift3D.

Other programs I have worked with include 3DS Max, Bryce, and Lightwave.
