w3schools is definitely an amazing resource- one way I taught myself was to download different 'free' templates (just google it, there's hundreds of resources) then play around with the source files as you learn more to see the different effects you can achieve. Also found this a great way to learn css- it forces you to start deconstructing the files and working your way through them to get the final outcome you want. Good luck! x
