Yeah, they use books, usually old books... I found my best reference materials to actually be spiral-bound books that companies such as Sun Microsystems gave out during lectures when they wanted to get their employees up to speed on a language or new technology very quickly. I currently have the complete course material for C/C++/Java/XML programming.
